Malawi Mission
- Malawi Schools Looking for Partnership
MTO (Monkey Bay Malawi) School
welcomes missionaries from MalawiMission.org to discuss major and minor
problems schools in the area are experiencing because of the lack of
funding.
The Role of Education
Education in Malawi is critical to the future of the country, and Primary
Education has a crucial role to play in developing children. This allows
them to play a part in the growth of their, villages, communities and
their country. Educating children (particularly girls) to read and write
can have a deep effect on Malawian society, including special benefits
that are felt in the health care sector.
How to Build a School
Unlike schools in developed countries, schools in Malawi are built by the
communities and villages that surround them. A campus normally consists of
a few school blocks, storage rooms, teacher houses, bathrooms, playing
field, and feeding centers. Once completed the Malawian government sends
teachers, principals and staff, paying them a monthly salary to work.
There are plenty of trained teachers but not enough schools to accommodate
them. Most Malawian teachers live and work on the school grounds.
Determined to Teach
All of the schools we have visited are in desperate need of funding in
order to start, repair or complete structures found on school grounds. We
continue to be surprised by the commitment of the school staff and their
yearning to teach, although they have very little to work with.
Frequently, classes are conducted under large trees, because of a lack of
school houses. Simple things that we take for granted (pencils, paper and
books) are treasures to the students and teachers. Another thing that
amazes us is the involvement of the parents. We met with community leaders
and PTA members of these schools. They are all ready to hear from you!!
Malawi Schools Assignment
Malawi Mission Inc., is facilitating the support of Primary Schools
Assignments. Three schools are involved: MTO School in Monkey Bay (Reuben
Nyang’wa Principal), Mponya School in Monkey Bay (Martin Mbelesela
Principal), Mkuyo School in Mponela (Bester Banda Principal). These
three schools teach standard 1 8 which is equivalent to the first eight
years in U.S. schools. We are seeking partnerships with any school that
would like to adopt one of these schools.
Give a pencil
or build a School Block
Each school has problems that can be solved with your help. Whether you
raise $5000 to build a school block or $50 to send pencils and paper, each
donation will be received with open arms. Support for this assignment is
being coordinated by Kamala Bauers. She is enlisting the help of a number
of primary schools in Floyd County to adopt a Malawian school and raise
funds to assist them.
The Objective
The main objective of the assignment is to improve the educational needs
of students at these schools and to help build needed structures to
accommodate the teachers. This will be accomplished by raising funds to
address key issues identified by the schools. A secondary goal is to
establish sustainable links between schools in the U.S. and schools in
Malawi. The underlying motivation is that through education, the health
care of the students, their families and communities will improve. We
believe that the awareness of international differences, at a young age
will inspire aspirations for aid.
